You may have noticed some young gardeners and entrepreneurs peddling their wares at the CHCM — fruits and vegetables that students from Harriet Tubman Elementary and Cesar Chavez Prep have grown and harvested from their school gardens and the North Columbia Heights Green community garden. Maybe you’ve stopped by their table during the kids’ monthly shift at our farmers’ market to purchase something, or maybe you wanted to learn how you can get involved with their Veggie Time program. (Did you know you were supporting our Youth Market Garden Program when you purchased those beets?)
Well, this coming Tuesday evening, you can taste some of the fruits of their labors. Literally. FUEL Pizza is providing delicious pizzas topped with Kid Power-grown veggies and herbs. It’s part of the “Lights On Afterschool” program — a day celebrated nationwide to call attention to the importance of after school programs for America’s children, families and communities. Lights On Afterschool is a project of the Afterschool Alliance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring that all children have access to quality, affordable afterschool programs. In addition to pizza, the event will also feature exhibits and presentations (including a little bit on the CHCM partnership with Kid Power) and run from 6-8pm.
To be a part of this celebration, please RSVP by calling (202)383-4543 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
